Large ships have been powered by wind for a very long time, but in ancient times, when sailing technology was not yet developed, sailing by wind alone was not feasible, so galleys were used, which used a combination of oars and sails. The Goryeo Dynasty's "leaky ships" were the last to be able to sail open ocean. 
The sailing principle of sailing ships is lift. When there is a headwind, rounding the sails increases the flow rate and creates lift. Underneath the boat is a centerboard (keel) that keeps the boat from being pushed from side to side. 
Sailing ships vary in size, but are typically at least 150 meters or 492 feet2. One particular sailing ship had seven masts and carried 43,000 square feet of cumulative canvas area. 
Sailing ships are primarily suited for ocean voyages because they are well adapted to light winds and are convenient for sailing. By crossing oceans, they discovered new lands and opened the door to global trade. Explorers like Christopher Columbus, Vasco da Gama, and Fernando Magellan used sailing ships to discover previously unknown lands and open trade routes with Europe.
